My first tutorial! Well, actually, it's my second. But the first one was so bad that it doesn't count. Here ya go!
Oh, and I made this icon for lijororli using her picture, so no taking unless she says so!
So, for this icon, I am using a picture of the lovely Isaac Hanson. I cropped and resized, and ended up with this:
Then I sharpened it:
I thought that this was a bit dark, so I did the old Screen trick – duplicated the background and set the duplicate to Screen at 70%. Then it looked much better:
Merge the layers.
Use the Freehand Selection Tool on Selection Type: Point to point, Mode: replace to outline the background (PS It’s much easier to do this if you enlarge the image). Then Gaussian Blur it with a radius of 2.
Now, duplicate the background twice. Set the first duplicate (what is now the middle layer) on Soft Light 100%. Then put the second duplicate on Overlay 60%.
Make a new layer and fill it with a dark blue color (I used #06105C) and set it to Exclusion at 36%.
Then I added a light texture from teh_indy: on a new layer. Then I erased all the black parts so that only the light part was on the icon, and set it to Soft Light at 100%.
So the icon with the light texture goes from this: to this:
Make another new layer. Use the Selection tool to draw a rectangle at the bottom of the icon. Use the dropper tool to select a color from the icon. I took a blue color from Ike’s shirt. It turned out to be #7A879A.
Again, use the dropper tool to select a color from the icon. I took a color from a color from the orangey-red spot under Isaac’s chin. It ended up being #C65532.
Now, create a new image and color it black. I put the text “Look into my eyes…” in the orange in Kartika font, size 11 on this new image. Then go to Selections > Modify > Expand and make the number of pixels 2.**
Copy and paste the text back onto the icon as a new layer and move it into the blue box.
Then to go Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow, Vertical: 1, Horizontal: -1, Opacity: 100, Blur: 1, Color: black, Shadow on New Layer: checked
Et voila:
Icon!
Yay! It's fairly simple, but I think it came out well. Comments are appreciated, especially constructive criticism!
**Note: I did not come up with this method for outlining text. I believe I got it from charliemc
