[01] my first tutorial feat. tackey & tsubasa
first tutorial. pretty image-intensive, feat. takizawa hideaki and tsubasa imai of the j-pop duo, tackey & tsubasa. i use photoshop cs2, but it shouldn't be too hard to translate to previous versions.
before:
after:
step 01: sharpen the base (filter>sharpen>sharpen).
step 02: sharpen it again, then fade it to 25% opacity. (edit>fade sharpen)

step 03: duplicate the base. set it to screen, 60% opacity.
step 04: duplicate the base again. set it to soft light, 30% opacity. this brightens it up a little and gets rid of the gray in their faces.

step 05: new layer, fill it with #001527 and set it to exclusion.

step 06: gradients! made by myself.
overlay, 15% opacity.
overlay, 100% opacity.
step 07: new layer, fill it with #FCC524 and set it to screen, 20% opacity.

step 08: added this light texture. made by myself.
screen, 100% opacity.
step 09: didn't think the texture was bright enough, so i duplicated the layer (from step #08) and set that to screen, 100% opacity as well. then i merged it with itself.
step 10: at this point, some of it was covering their faces, so i got rid of that. then i lowered the opacity of the light texture to 80% (couldn't decide on a brightness!)

step 11: more light textures! the icon is still too blah for me. all made by myself:
hard light, 100%
hard light, 60%
hard light, 85%

step 12: oookkay~~now onto text and border and stuff! i added a brush that i made myself. it's the infinity symbol. stuck it between the 60% and 85% hard light layers.

step 13: added text. "one plus one equals" in times new roman, 6px, strong. stroked it with 1px #FFFFFF set to screen.

step 14: added a border from one of the colors of the icon i stole using the eyedropper tool, and set it to screen. we are done!

and if you get confused, here's what the layers look like:

edit: the border layer shouldn't say "normal", that's misleading. i actually did set it to screen. :)
i hope that was clear enough for you. i don't use other people's brushes, gradients, or light textures, i do , however, use tutorials to make my own! a couple by
awmpdotnet were employed. i'd love to see what other people can do using their own brushes and what not. if you're not used to doing this stuff systematically, it can definitely take a while, but it's worth it to see what you can do all by yourself.
