Coloring a texture: Another full icon tutorial

I saw some icons of cities and thought they were neat so I made my own. And I just thought of sharing how I got it - from this to look like this Image hosted by Photobucket.com in PSP 9. May be translatable, not sure though.

You'll have to excuse me I think I cropped it a bit off while I was going through the process again to make the screenshots. Stupid pc. Oh well.

Ready? Here we go.

1. The usual. I cropped and resized the image to standard icon size. Duplicated it and sharpened it once. Free Image Hosting at www.ephotohut.net
2. On that duplicate, desaturate it by going to Adjust-Hue and Saturation-Hue/Saturation/Lightness. Give it a saturation of -50. Now it looks like this-Free Image Hosting at www.ephotohut.net

3. I grabbed this texture by dearest Image hosted by Photobucket.com. But I colorised it to a light purple by going to Adjust-Hue and Saturation-Colorise. I gave it a hue of 207 and a saturation of 108. Paste it as a new layer and put it on screen.
4. Then go to Edit-Copy Merged and Ctrl L or Paste as new layer. Put this on Lighten.
5. Then put this gradient (unknown)Image hosted by Photobucket.com as a new layer on Overlay.
6. Almost done. If you're happy with how it looks, you can stop now or add your own textures or duplicate the texture. But now I'm going to add my text. I used Century Gothic size 10, typed "I left my in". I right-clicked and choose Properties. I unchecked the stroke color box. Set the Fill color to white and OK.
Beneath that, I typed sanfrancisco. You can do this on a separate layer if you want. Have both the Stroke and Fill color to white and turn on anti-alias so it won't look ugly.
7. Lastly, the heart brush on a new layer. I forgot who made it as well so please tell me if you know. Anyway, here's a copy of it Image hosted by PicsPlace.to to use. Size 35 and rotate it to 350 and I just picked this color from the icon, #260741. Put it on Luminance (L) blend mode. Add your own borders if you like but put them on a different layer.
Now arrange your layers up and down. Promote the base (the image you started with) to a raster layer otherwise you can't move it. Here's how it should look

The vector layer is the text layer. On top of that is the layer for the heart brush which is my last layer since I didn't add a border. Raster 5 is the base or "background". All other layers are named thus.
And you're done!Image hosted by Photobucket.com Feel free to eventually play with the settings if you want so you can have your own unique look.
