Take your picture:
and do whatever you normally do. I usually sharpen, brighten/contrast, and hard light any black and white photo I use.
And here's what it looks like now:
Eh? Okay.
Then I reduce the whole image to 100 x 80 and add a gradient by
crumblingwalls (lighten). Paste it onto a new 100 x 100 area.

Now I add a brush bystickywicket in colour #5F0A04 BEHIND the picture. I wanted some space so I took my selection tool and covered about two pixels from the top of the picture like so:

then:
Then go up to Edit >> Clear and do the same the the bottom of the picture. You can leave it as is (which I normally would do) but I wanted something else. So I added some text with colour #5F0A04.
