Question about screen blend mode and masks

I saw <ahref="http://www.absolutetrouble.com/icontutorial.php?icontutorial07">this tutorial</a> for PSP7, which uses a black brush as a mask. Areas that are black in the brush will let the layers underneath show through, areas that are white will not, and grey areas will allow a certain percentage to show through, when the blending mode for the brush layer is set to 'screen'.

However, the same technique does not work in PhotoShop CS. I have checked in the archives under 'blend modes' and 'brushes' and 'masks' and the 'PhotoShop tips', and can't seem to find anything that corresponds to this technique.

Could someone please either direct me to what I may have missed, or tell me if there is a way to achieve this same effect in PS CS?
