Tutorial for PS CS - Lighting Effects
How to make this:
using Photoshop CS.
Start with this picture of Shannon:

crop to this at 100 x 100px resolution 72:

This will now be your base image for the icon. Desaturate and then adjust the brightness and contrast to +20 and +10 respectively.
Sharpen once and your image should look like this:

Then go to Filter -> Render -> Lighting Effects. Select the "2 O'Clock Spotlight" option from the pre-sets.

Now to get the smoothed look on her face, use the blur tool with a soft round brush. The strength should be set at 50%. Run the brush over her face avoiding the eyes and the lips. You should get something similar to this:

The lip colouring comes next. I normally zoom in a bit for this. Using the polygonal lasso tool, create a mask around her lips. It helps if you can stick mostly to the line, however, you can always tidy it up a bit later on.

Add a new layer and flood fill within your mask with #F20303. Set this layer to multiply. It should look a bit like this:

Add another layer and fill with this gradient:
. Set it to Multiply.
Duplicate the base layer and bring it over the top of the others. Now set it to Linear Light. This will give you the real contrast in the icon:
Time to add the text. I used "How I Wish I Had Screamed Out Loud" from Tears and Rain by James Blunt. The font is Palace Script MT set to 4pt and the colour #020202. You can use any font for this, the text is really decorative rather than to be read. Here are the settings I used:

Add another layer and put a rectangular mask around the left-hand side of the icon. Inside the mask use this brush by
happyconfusion7 in #020202
so that the vertical lines run just down the side of her face.
Yet another layer, this time use this brush:
again by
happyconfusion7 as the border.
Finally on top of it all, add another layer and fill with #CABFBA. Set it to Multiply. The icon should now look like this:

Merge your layers and save.
