W00t! My second tutorial!

1. Ok. First of all, we're gonna start with our picture of American Idol winner Carrie Underwood.

2. Crop the picture to 100 x 100 so we have this:

3. Ok, I like to tinker with my base, so I'm gonna Sharpen (Filter >> Sharpen >> Sharpen). First, I'm gonna duplicated my sharpened base, and add a nice Blur (Filter >> Blur >> Gaussian Blur) and I'm gonna blur it by 1.5 pixels. Hit ok.

4. Our base now looks all floopy. So, set the Blending Mode of that layer to Soft Light. Gives it a nice glow, eh?

But it's still not right to me, so I duplicate the most recent layer, and it makes it a little darker. Perfect.

5. Now, you might notice that in the whole base preparation thing, her lips were drained of most of their colour. Never fear, we will remedy that now! Create a new layer, and name it "Lips".

6. Zoom in (I go to about 500% so you can really see what you're doing) and fill her lips in with a light pink (I used #F1BFD5), and the lighter the better.

7. Set the blending mode of the lips layer to Mulitply. See how more defined they are now?

8. Create a new layer, and name it "Gradient". Add the following gradient, made by crumblingwalls, and set it to Soft Light.

9. Add a new layer on the top of everything. This is the text layer. So whack it in where you want it, I'm going for the left-hand corner of the picture. I simply wrote "Carrie" in lower case letters, with the following settings:
+ Font: 18th Century
+ Size: 14pt
+ Anti-Alias: Smooth
+ Colour: #000000

10. Personally, I think it looks a little beastly, with the black font on such a creamy icon, so I set the Blending Mode to Soft Light. Now it's too sheer. So duplicate the text layer, and it gives us nice, dreamy text.

11. Now for the border. Create a new layer, and put this border on in black.

Then, we're just going to follow the same procedure as the text. Set the border layer to Soft Light, then duplicate that layer.

And there we have it, a pretty Carrie icon!
