Masking with gradient?

Question:
I've heard it's possible to do layer masking with a gradient somehow. This sounds like an interesting concept, which I'd like to give a try. Sadly, I have no idea how this would work.
All I have found in the memories about this, was a mention of the possibility to do this, in passing. Would anyone be able to point me towards a tutorial? (I use PS7.)
