Fading row of squares on brushes/stamps

Searched the vast memories and couldn't come up with it, but I know I've seen a tut for it somewhere. See the row of incrementally fading squares used on the text stamp placed on this icon?



How do you make them? A friend of mine is dying to know. Thanks!
