My very first Picture It (PI) tutorial :D
Thanks for your encouragement to my previous post. I hope this tutorial will be of help to someone out there :-))
How to make:
(using PI 2002)
From:
(Legolas image taken from LotR official website)
First of all: whatever you do, do not start by making a square cut-out and then resizing it to 100x100. Because:
- At any point in the icon making proces, you might want to move the image a little or make it a little bigger or smaller.
- PI goes a bit funny on the outer edges of a project, so you might end up with a white pixel line you don't want.
- To use the emphasize effect in PI , you might need something to select other than your image.
So what I do is always start with a simple 100x100 square (made in MS Paint) and built the icon up over that.
Also important is to keep saving the image and checking it, because especially small effects may look different in the program then they do after they're saved and viewed on a website.
Since in my experience it's easier to follow a path, if you know where you're going: this is how the project looks in the end:

After you've opened your base square, open the picture of Legolas and drag it to the base. Flip it. Resize and move it to the right position:

Select the base. Go to Photo & Color Effects, then Emphasize. Choose Desaturate:

Select the image. Go to Touchup, then Brightness & Contrast. Set brightness to +28 and contrast to +100:

To make the border (Borders are tricky in PI, cos the outer edges of your icon may look slightly different in the program than how it does after you safe it. So keep saving the image and checking if it's exactly like you want it)
Phase 1: Pick Add Shape (on the top menu), then shape, then square. Set Fill color to No Fill, Line Color to kaki green and Line Thickness to 4. Resize and move till in fits round your icon. Now go to Photo Effects, then Color or Texture, then Transparent fade gradual. Pick the spiral fade:

Phase 2: Add another square (no fill, color black, line thickness 4). Resize and move till it almost overlays completely with your first border:

Now add the text: Choose Lucida Calligraphy, pt 7 (I custom-made the yellowy color). Turn the textbox on its side and in the right position.
Go to Photo effects, then Frames & edge effects, then Highlighted edges. Choose Thick Under. Customize the edge and set thickness to 99.
Now go to Photo Effects, then Color or Texture, then Transparent fade gradual. Pick the linear fade.

Voila :-)
