Colorizing help

I'm currently trying to teach myself how to colorize a black and white photo. I found a great tutoiral but everytime I read it, it seems to be missing a chunk. Could someone explain this to me better?

1. First off, start with a black and white image. You can also have an already coloured image, if all you want to do is change parts of the image.

2. When you have your image in a new document, duplicate the layer by going to LAYER > DUPLICATE LAYER and then select OK.

3. On the duplicated layer, go to IMAGE > ADJUSTMENTS > HUE/SATURATION . When adding the hue, click colorize. When you have found the colour you want, click OK.

4. Now, go to LAYER > ADD NEW LAYER MASK > HIDE ALL . Your image should go back to greyscale. Now what you do is select a round brush, I usually choose one from the Drop Shadow Brushes. Make sure that your colours palette is set to the default colours. All you have to do now is add the new colour.

5. To add the colour to the specific area, use your brush tool. You may want to zoom in if your image is smaller. If you make mistakes, it's alright, you can always fix that after. Go over the area with your brush tool until the whole area is covered. To add the colour, you must use the white. To remove the colour added, you must use the black.

6. Now, to make the colour look real, you will need to change the blending mode. I usually go with COLOR or SOFTLIGHT but you can experiment until you are happy.

Now all that is left to do is repeat steps 2-6. Just remember to duplicate the original greyscale image. Now do the colours for each of the other parts.

I have Photoshop 7 and Elements 2

Thank you in advance!
