Help please!

ok...using one of my disks i was lucky enough to get a free 60 day trial with paint shop pro 8. Even though it tells you how to delete a background using layers, I always end up deleting the whole image on accident. Can anyone please explain this to me in simpler terms? Or possibly make this transparent? I really appreciate it.
