2 Tutorials -- Pete Wentz, Patrick Stumph (Fall Out Boy)
I'm stepping down a notch from a full-fledged guide to 2 simple tutorials.
Trust me, they aren't hard or time-consuming. ;)
Here are the coloring effects I will teach you today:

PHOTOSHOP 7.0 TUTORIALS
Let's start with Patrick Stumph from Fall Out Boy. =)

Take your picture and resize, crop, ect. Then you get your base. ^^ Now, I sharpened and unsharp masked my base once, then took my blur tool (Brush: 5px
Mode: Normal Strength: 36%) and smoothed out his face. Go to 'Image>>Adjustments>>Brightness/Contrast' and lower the brightness to around
-25 and -20, and up the contrast to around 15 and 10, then click 'Ok'.
Duplicate your base layer once and desaturate (ctrl+shift+u). Set this layer to soft light and merge visible (ctrl+shift+e).

Create a new layer and fill it with FFEFCF. Set this layer to multiply, 60%.

Make a new layer and, using your gradient tool, make a gradient on it with tannish/skin colors. I used this one (by me):

And set this layer to soft light, 100%.

Here's a neat effect I really like...
Create another new layer and fill this one with FFF78F. Set this layer to saturation, 100%.

New layer. Fill this one with 000000 (black) and set it to color, 20%.

Yet another new layer! ^^ Fill this one with F5DFB9 and set it to soft light, 100%.

Make a new layer...again...and use your gradient tool...again. LOL xD Use a blue gradient, light blues, not dark blues because your icon will be too dark. I used this gradient (by me):

Set this layer to color burn, 100%.

The last layer or two is up to you. I made a new layer, made a 5px white border (Location: inside), then a 1px black border (Location: center). Now, I made my last layer and used a tiny text brush by
colortone.
Voila, instant "subtle colored" icon!
Time for my Pete Wentz tutorial. =D I had to recreate this icon...I thought I saved the icon as a .psd, but I didn't. x_x' I'll do the best I can for this one. You should get what it looks like, even if I forget a step or whatever. ^^;

Find a picture, resize, crop.
For this tutorial, I suggest using a picture with a bright color somewhere -- in this one, the 'bright color somewhere' is Pete's hoodie and his pink bracelet. I decided, for this icon, I wanted the pink to be the focal point, so I highly suggest you have a picture with something that could be a focal point -- something that will really stick out. Then again, you can just choose any picture you want, I'm just suggesting something for you so you can get your creativity and imagination going. :)
Sharpen the icon once then unsharp mask (Filter>Sharpen>Unsharp Mask) it once. Using my blur tool, I softened up Pete's face and hands. After that, go to 'Image>Adjustments>Brightness/Contrast' and, like in my first tut, pick a number between -25 and -20 for brightness and 15 and 10 for contrast.
With that done, duplicate the base once, desaturate (ctrl+shift+u) and set this layer to soft light, 100%.

Create a new layer and use a yellowish gradient. I used this gradient (by me):

Set this layer to soft light, 100%.

On a new layer, use a blueish gradient and set that layer to color burn, 60%. I used this gradient by moi:

Make a new layer and fill it with FFDD00. This color might not work for your icon, or any others in this tutorial for that matter. Just snoop around your color swatches (Window>Swatches) and try out many different colors to find what looks best. Set this layer to saturation, 100%.
The icon looks very ugly, I know. But don't worry, it'll be worth it in the end. ^_~

Make a new layer. At this point, I wanted to focus on getting the pink look how I wanted it to look. Since it was pink, I tried many shades of red and red-pink and red-purple and pink and pink-purple...I tried so many different colors! The key to get this effect is all in the colors you use for your saturation layers.
If you want to focus on blue in a picture, try shades of blue, blue-green, blue-purple, teal...any colors around blue on your color swatches. I finally settled on F04E63 and set it to saturation, 100%.

Duplicate your base layer and drag it above all your other layers. Set the duplicate to saturation, 60%. Please note that I DID NOT merge my base layer and my desaturated duplicate!

Create a new layer and fill it with 000000 (black). Like in the previous tutorial, set this layer to color, but at 40% opacity.

Make a new layer and fill it with ANY color that looks GOOD at multiply, 30%. I'm saying choose any color that looks good because I chose FBBD97, which looks good on my icon, but it might not look good on your's. So..yeah. xP

The last part is up to you. Add whatever you want. I added a 1px black border and a tiny text brush by
colortone.
First version:

Second version:

Pretty close. ^^
Hope you enjoyed my two tutorials for the day and learned something from them. :D Have fun with 'em...I'd love to see what you came up with!
