Uma Thurman Icon Tutorial in PS7

This is my first tutorial! Hopefully you will find it helpful.

We are going from this: Image hosted by Photobucket.com

To this: Image hosted by Photobucket.com in Photoshop 7.

First thing first, find the image you want. I found the picture of Uma Thurman I'll be using by Googling her name, and since it's too big, we'll just start off with the base.

1. This is a bit too blurry. Sharpen it once, and then duplicate it.

2. Set the duplicated layer to screen, 43%. Duplicate your bottom layer again, bring it to the top, and set that layer to hard light, 59%. Play the with opacities... everyone has different taste!

3. Duplicate your bottom layer yet again and bring it to the top. Set it to linear burn, 64% and desaturate it by holding shift+control+u. You should have something that looks like this:

4. Create a new layer and fill it with the dark blue color #000A56. Set the blend mode to exclusion, 73%.

5. Now, I want to put a nice brown gradient in there. However, I don't have any. So picking some nice mellow browns, I make my own gradient using the gradient tool and gaussian blur in a new 100x100 blank image. I come up with this:

I stick it on top of all my layers and put it on soft light, 52%. It looks like this:

6. Well, I like how it looks right now, so I think I'll just do some polishing. I go back to the very first background layer and, using the lasso tool, outline her eyes and sharpen them once. I do the same with her lips.

7. Now I create a new layer, and using some fuzzy texture brush that I don't know who it came from (sorry!), I kind of put the edge of near the right hand side and a little in the lower left.

8. Since I happen to be listening to Sick Cycle Carousel by Lifehouse, I figure some Lifehouse lyrics can't hurt! Using 10pt, Times New Roman I type in "one more time" and position it by her cheek.

9. Some tiny text is in order. Since I had no tiny text that I liked with this icon, I made my own by typing in some more lyrics from this song at 2pt Times New Roman, and spacing the characters at 600. You can do this by typing your text, going to Window-->Character and in the spot that shows a graphic of space between letters, type something really big. Here's an example if you don't get what I mean:

10. I want the tiny text to be a bit darker, so I rasterize the tiny text layer, duplicate it, lower the opacity to around 70% on the top layer, and the combine those layers.

11. It needs something. So I slap in a cute little swirly thing near the side of the text and lower the opacity a bit.

12. Add your standard 1px border or whatever else you like and you're done!
