Technicolor Movies

Does anybody have any tips for colouring icons made from caps of old Technicolor movies such as, say, Gone with The Wind? My icons tend to come out looking garish, unnatural and ugly whereas I want them to look more natural, more like a modern photograph or screencap. I know they're different and that's just the way colour films looked back then but it's so infuriating.







Any help will be very very welcome. Oh and I'm using Photoshop CS although I think colouring is pretty much the same in all programs =)
