Font size issues

I'm having trouble with my text/font size. When I opened up a new 100x100 canvas in Photoshop 7 and tried to type in something, it wouldn't show up unless the font size became something upward of 1000. Yet when I opened older icons and checked the text layers' font sizes, they were the same (like size 12 or whatnot). How can I fix the font size screw-up?
