Photoshop 6: Cropped image, blind effect, borders.

We’re going to be making this icon
This goes of to ronniekins77 because she mod choiced it and I know she’s been wanting to know how I made it :)
Basic knowledge of tools help :)

Since I don’t have the .psd on the original, I’m going to use these steps to make one very similar to it.

1. this image from DesiringHayden.net. Warning, it’s a very high resolution.

Use the Select Rectangle Tool
Style: Constraint Aspect Ratio Width: 1 Height: 1

Choose a good part of the image so that the face is slightly off center.
Like so:

Now we are going to fix him up a bit.
Go to Image>Image Size..
Set it to 200x200 pixels.

It’s just easier to do everything this way.

Filter>Sharpen>Sharpen

Do that 2 times.

2. Then take your Blur Tool at Opacity 40% and clean up the skin.
Avoid lips, eyes and hair.
I use a Soft Round Brush at 10 px.

3. Now Filter>Sharpen>Sharpen ONCE.

Resize your image to 100x100
Image>Image Size…

See now we are ready to move on.

I’m not going to mess to much with the coloring of this icon since it is nice and bright, but I am going to go to Image>Adjust>Auto Contrast and that fix it up just right for me and doesn’t take away from the natural colors of the photo as much as Auto Levels would.

4. Now onto the diagonaly blinds J
The tutorial to make the pattern is here where my questioned got answered with a nice step by step comment.

Layer>New>Layer

5. Bucket Fill Tool
Fill: Pattern

Drop down your patterns and make sure you have your diagonal line selected.
Then just click the new layer.

It should look like this:

EEK! Right?
So set that top layer to:
Style: Soft Light
Opacity: 100%

Much better :)

6. Next we go to the bottom layer with the Rectangle Selection Tool

Style: Normal

Select certain parts of the image you want to make into different parts of the icon.
Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) your selections on top of the base and overlay layers.

Like so:

7. Next make a new layer

Layer>New>Layer
Bucket Fill>Pattern
Fill the New Layer.

Make sure this layer is between the first and second small selections you made.

8. click your first selection and then take your Magic Wand Tool and select the open area of the piece.

Now click on your newly made pattern and hit <-Backspace to clear the selected area.

Repeat 7-8 for the second selection layer.

9. On both cropped parts we are going to change the direction.

Edit>Transform>Flip Horizontal

Yes, to both layers :)

Like so:

10. Again change the Layer Style on both to:
Style: Soft Light
Opacity: 100%

11. Add the borders to the parts

Select the Layer.
Go to
Layer>Layer Style>Stroke…
Size: 1px
Position: Outside
Blend Mode: Normal
Opacity: Normal
Fill Type: Color
Color: #000000

12. To add the bars that go behind the two selections We’re going to use the:
Rectangle Tool
Click the down Arrow for Rectangle Options
Fixed Size:
Width: 100 px
Height: 5 px

Make the first one.

Then go to Layer>Rasterize…>Layer

Set it to Overlay

Place it under a selection.

Repeat this step for the other cropped part.

13. Create the Border

Layer>New>Layer
Bucket Tool
Fill: Foreground
Color: #000000

Eraser tool
Set it as a square with a hardness of 100 > Erase with a 96px square

Set the layer on Overlay

14. Magic Wand Tool
Select the colored border.
Click on your blind effect for the base
Then hit Backspace to clear selected area.
It takes away the blinds from the border like so:

Skip Step 15 if you want to keep the crops colored.

15. Select your cropped layer.
Go To: Image>Adjust>Desaturate

16. Layer>Flatten Image
And you’re done!
