Saving layers

Another brilliant question: I remember seeing somewhere around here an entry on how to save different layers of an icon so you could preserve the style. However, my fingers must been malfunctioning that day, since I can't find that entry under my memories, and is of course to blind to find them here - checked under layers and saving. Help, please. ;_;
