PS8 Tutorial
to
in 9 steps using PS8.0.Step One: Open up the base that you would like to use. I had to do a little bit of color help with this one because of the odd lighting used. I did CTRL+Shift+ALT+L for Auto Contrast, and then CTRL+Shift+L for Auto Levels, and CTRL+Shift+B for Auto Color. This is going to be my base:

Step Two: Now, in this case, it's a little bit dark for my taste. So I duplicate the layer (CTRL+J) and set it to Screen @ 45% Opacity, and then merge the layers. (CTRL+Shift+E)

Step Three: Now, I need to Sharpen the layers, but I don't want it to look too over done. I go to Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen Edges. Then I go to Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen. After that, I want to fade the sharpen. Use CTRL+Shift+F and fade the Sharpen to 50% opacity.

Step Four: For the coloring I did a couple of steps. First, take color #C69C6D and do a flood fill and set it to Overlay @ 100%. Then I made a gradient using #CF5152 and #437CC6 and set it to Screen @ 86%.

Step Five: Now it's time for the text. I write "Eric" in all small letters using Century Gothic @ 24 pt in black.

Step Six: Now open up a new 100x100px document and make a tiny text brush. For this I used Century Gothic @ 3pt in black. I wrote "time is of the essence" and it's tracking for the characters is @ 200. After you write that, go to Edit > Define Brush Preset. Now close that document (don't worry about saving it). Back on my icon, I stamp the brush directly over where I have the name "eric" on a new layer.

Step Seven: Now I go down to Add a Layer style and add a white stroke around the brush I just used @ 2px.

Step Eight: For the brush, I used one of my hand drawn brushes that I drew with a permanent marker and then scanned. I just placed it directly underneath the name in color #726588 @ 78% opacity.

Step Nine: Merge all of the layers (Ctrl+Shift+E) and then duplicate your bottom layer (CTRL+J) then go to Edit > Stroke and put a 1px black stroke.
