Several people have asked me to do another tutorial for GIMP, so here's another one. :)

Note: Images came from here and here
1. First I cropped the screencap I wanted to use and resized it to 100x100 pixels and sharpened it. (Filters->Enhance->Sharpen)
Here's what I got:
2. The base is nice, but I felt like it was too dark so I duplicated it and set the duplicated layer to screen at 54.9
3. I created a new layer and filled it with this
and set it to burn at 100.
4. I set this light texture
(made by
awmp) to overlay at 100 to bring more light to not only the image but to Dawson's face. The difference is subtle, but I like it.
5. I created a new layer and filled it with this gradient
(made by?) and set it to multiply at 100.
Okay here's what I have so far:
6. Now I opened another image in a seperate window, cropped and scaled it to 45x45 pixels.
*This was pasted on a transparent layer.*
I duplicated the image twice and set the duplicated layers to screen at 91 *now sure why I did this, just did.* I didn't like the way the tiny pics looked on top of the image so I drug them below all the layers, excluding the base and its duplicate. Sorry if that doesn't make sense, but I didn't think to do this until after I was done playing with the base so I was staying true to how I made the icon.
7. I added a box border brush made by
_joni around the small pic to give it a framed look.
8. I added this border
(made by ?) and set it to multiply. I erased the line in the middle because it just gets in the way.
9. Last, but not least the text. I wrote "stare at a" in futura at 10 and "memory" in LainieDaySH at 23. I flattened the image and the icon is done. :)

I hope this was helpful and I'd love to see what everyone comes up with. Most of the icons I make come from ideas provided by people who post tutorials in
icon_tutorial with my own little twists.
