Pixel text on smaller icons?

Okay, I've been using pixel text on some of my icons lately and they all look fine with the standard icon size. But when I try typing on a smaller version of the icon, like say 70 x70, it looks stupid or too big. I've seen people use small fonts or pixel text on those smaller icons and they looked normal to me. Am I missing a trick here?
