Colouring Effect Tutorial

Go from to in PS7.  Easy to translate.

I took a screencap from the Bollywood film Shakti.  I resized it to 100 x 100.

Sharpen the base to your liking.  Then duplicate the base once and
desaturate it (Image>Adjustments>Desaturate or
Ctrl+Shift+U).

Add a new layer and fill it with a dark blue colour.  Set that to Exclusion.

Add a new layer and fill with a brownish-peachy colour.  Set that to Multiply.  Merge your layers.

Now, take the blur tool and set to 3-5px soft edge, 36% opacity.
Zoom in, and smooth out the skin, avoiding the eyes and mouth.

Add a new layer and with a soft brush, 1-3 px, zoom in really close to
the eyes.  With white, highlight the inner part of the iris.
Set that layer to soft light.  This brightens the eyes.
Merge your layers.

Take this texture from tre-xture, and set to Overlay, 50% opacity.

Add a new layer and fill with #CFD389.  Set to Soft Light, 50%.

Now, you've got your icon.  It should look like this:

That's just the colouring.  You can do a lot with it, or just
leave it like that.  For example, you could turn it into this:   I just cropped the eyes, added Dyspepsia 24 pt font, and a brush.

(NOTE: (1) Don't take any icons from this tutorial.  (2) The creator of the brush used on my later example can be found here.)
