PS - screen & exclusion effect

I'm going to get addicted to making tutorials, I can tell already. Heh.

To make this ---> into this --->

Crop and resize your icon picture.

Sharpen once, then duplicate the layer. Fill the background layer with a bright (but not too bright) color, like this blue:

Set the duplicated icon layer to Screen.

Duplicate the layer again, and set this one to Soft Light.

Use the Rectangle Marquee tool and drag around half the icon (I did the left half) and copy it by hitting CTRL+C on your keyboard. Then delete that half on both of the layers, and paste the icon half twice by hitting CTRL+P.

Set the first pasted half to Exclusion, and the second pasted half to Soft Light, and set the Soft Light layer to 70% opacity.

Your layer menu should look like this:

I wrote in what the settings of each layer should be.

Take a brown-colored gradient like the one below (by me), drag it on top of everything, and set it to Lighten.

Create a new layer, add brushes and/or effects of your choice, and flatten. Go to Filter ---> Render ---> Lens Flare to create a lens flare. Add a border if you choose, and you're done :) This effect also looks really cool if you use a bright pink/magenta color in place of the blue.
