Gradients, Colouring, and Textures, OH MY!
Go from
to
in PS7. I think it's pretty easy to translate.
I took a screencap from Touching Evil's episode "Justine" and resized it to 100 x 100.
Sharpen the base to your liking. On this image, I think I
sharpened once, then used Sharpen Edge and/or Sharpen Mask(Ammount:
50%, Radius: 1.0, Threshold: 0). It depends on what image you're
using though.
Duplicate your base twice. Desaturate the top two
(Image>Adjustments>Desaturate or Ctrl+Shift+U). Set the
middle layer to Soft Light, 100%. Then set the top layer to
Screen 20%. If your picture is really dark, then use a higher
opacity.
Add a new layer and fill it with a dark blue color. For example,
you could use #0B132E. Set that to Exclusion, 100%. Then
add another layer and fill with #FFCC99. Set to Multiply,
50%. Merge your layers.
Now, take the blur tool at 3px, 36% opacity. Zoom in, and smooth
our their faces. Avoid the hair, eyes, and lips. Be careful
on the nose - it'll look like a shapeless blob if you blur it too
much. Then, at the same opacity, change the size to a 13px
brush. Blur the background (the wall). I did this on this
photo, because it wasn't the best quality, and it looked too
pixel-y.
(OPTIONAL: Use the Unsharpen
Mask (Filter>Sharpen>Unsharpen Mask). Set the Ammount to
50%, the Radius to 1.0, and the Threshold at 0. If you don't like
how it looks (the skin should be smooth, but with a little bit of
distinction), then you can skip this part.)
By now, this is what my icon looks like:
(NOTE: All credit for textures and gradients, etc., can be found here. I have no idea who specifically made these gradients and textures, but their names will be on there.)
Set to Soft Light, 20% Opacity
Set to Soft Light, 100% Opacity
Set to Multiply, 20% Opacity
Set to Overlay, 30%
Now, you should have this:
You can add some text, brushes, etc., etc. You get the picture.
(NOTE: Don't take this icon & claim it on your own.)
