make this glitter effect on text inspired by this entry
http://www.livejournal.com/community/icon_tutorial/1912861.html

so take one pattern of blinkies, as suggested by touchofdust (check the link above for more blinkies , scrool down that page)
such as this one

if you need to do a image no bigger than the blinkie

you may want to follow the step 1 of this tutorial and then skip directly to step 4 (and be sure to work in RGB it comes out better)

1. you open the pattern , notice it has a number of layers (3 in this case)
and it's better to unoptimize the animation first (filters>animation>unoptimize) and work with the unoptimized file

2.save each level as a separate image in a GIMP pattern folder wth numbers as file names to remember in wich order they were, reload patterns to make them appear between your patterns

3.open a new file the size you will need for your text or bigger ,you can always crop it later.
make 2 other layers in this new file and fill them with your 3 different patterns

4.now make your text, you need to make negative text: so using selection fill the outside of text and clear the inside. YOu need to have transparent text. (I hope you all know how text tool works)

5.copy the text layer 2 times e make a layer "sandwich" such this one

6. merge down each text layer with a pattern layer

7. save as gif (chose to save animation!) (you could optimize for gif before saving it)
