I've never done an icon tutorial before, so I apologise in advance if it's hard to understand at points. I got a request in another community to write a tutorial for a specific icon I made... so here it goes.
This is written for Photoshop 7.0, but I'm sure it can be done in other programs.
The icon style we're going for...
1) Okay, so I started off with this promo shot from Degrassi.

2) I then go up to Image >>> Adjustments >>> Threshold.
3) I mess around with the settings until I get a nice balance of black and white. My end number was 86.
My picture now looks like...

4) Now I open up a new 100x100 file and I paste the previous image into the new canvas. I go to Edit >>> Transform >>> Scale until I am pleased with the size and placement of the picture.

5) I like bright colours, so I chose to color in a part of the picture with a bright pink. (#FC00CC) I use the paint bucket tool with a tolerance of to fill in the section that I want.

6) I add some text in Romeo font size 18, in the colour 00CCCC (because turquoise and pink together look lovely).
7) I add a layer style to the text - a drop shadow, in the same pink colour I used on the shirt. It's a normal blend mode with an opacity of 100%, the distance is 0px, the spread is 100%, and the size is 1px.
8) I then go to Edit >>> Transform >>> Rotate so my text can be angled. I adjust the placement of my text... and then I'm done.

I also used this same process to make this:
Well, I hope this was easy enough to follow and that somebody finds it useful.
