Vector drawing or other techniques

Does anyone here know how to make even curves in Photoshop? I try to use the vector tool, but it confuses me so much, and all it seems to make is a path; I can't trace it or draw on it or use the mathematical curve as a graphic. Can anyone help me basically draw curves that are really even without me having to freehand it with a mouse? Ick!
