Brush problems

I'm having brush problems. I can't seem to get my brushes to lay the right way. I'm also having some text problems...



I set the brush tool up:

And the brush comes out like this:

It's lopsided, and I have absolutely no idea why. I'm also having trouble with text. When I type, it's kind of like i'm typing with a crop tool, because the text shows up from the background, not on top of the image.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
