my first icon tutorial
hey everyone. ive been using this community for awhile now and thought i should make a tutorial. so here is my first tutorial. for Adobe Photoshop 7.0.
we will learn to turn this:

to this:

step 1: choose your base. im using this base that i got from cropping a larger picture of ewan mcgregor.

step 2: take your base and duplicate it, desaturate it, and set it on SCREEN 100% opacity

step 3: take this
and put it on top of your base on COLOR at 100% opacity

step 4: take this
and put it on top of what you have on SCREEN at 100% opacity (i flipped it horizontally, than flipped it vertically to get this
then i put it on my base)
now i have this:
step 5: then i took this
and put it on top. SCREEN at 70% opacity.
now i have this:
step 6: after that i took
again. i flipped it horizontally then flipped it verticallly to get
as in step 4. i put this on my base at SCREEN at 100% opacity.
i know have this:
its not much diffrent than in step 5 but it does add a little something.
step 7: duplicate your background picture. desaturate it. bring it to the top of everything and set it on SOFT LIGHT at 100% opacity.
should look something like this:
basically all that did was uncover his face.
step 8: now im adding my text. im just using something as simple as his name "ewan". before the text, i flatten my image. i take the text tool and type "ewan" in size 18. the font is Jefferson and it is smooth. the color of the text is a color i picked with the eye dropper from the base image (#BATA42)
on the text layer, i go up to Layer>Layer Style>Outer Glow. i click on that. i keep all the settings the same except the color. you can change the color to anything you think will go with the icon. i used #BFCBAE.
step 9: on the same text layer i go up to Layer>Layer Style>Inner Glow. i keep all the same settings except the color. change it to the same color you used for the outer glow. (i used #BFCBAE)
step 10: i think that the text doesnt show up enough so i duplicated the text layer. now it looks like this and your done.
all the light textures and what not are credited in my profile. i would love to see what you have made with this tutorial. when using a color picture, you can either desaturate the original picture before this tutorial or you can just use it with the color. it comes out with pretty close to the same effect.
