Full Icon Tutorial 1 for PSP8

1. Resize it then crop it.
2. Go to layers > Duplicate. Then take the sharpen tool with the following settings and sharpen the eyes and the mouth only. Then you will have this: Image hosted by Photobucket.com

3. Now go back to the bottom layer and duplicate that again. Put it between the sharpened layer and the background layer. Go to Gaussian Blur>strength 1.00. After you’ve done this lower the opacity of the sharpened layer to about 80%, so it’s not as strong. Now you have this: Image hosted by Photobucket.com
4. Go to Layers > Merge > Merge all {flatten}
5. Duplicate that layer and set it to Soft light. Now it should look like this: Image hosted by Photobucket.com
6. Create a new raster layer. Take a small heart brush. You can find a lot of great ones at 100x100_brushes. Apply the brush on her cheek and then set that layer to Soft light again. This is what it should look like now: Image hosted by Photobucket.com
7. Go to Layers > Merge > Merge all {Flatten}
8. Copy the image and paste it as a new image.
9. Go to resize and resize 40x40 px and then sharpen it. This is what you should have now: Image hosted by Photobucket.com
10. Now go to Hue and Saturation > Hue/Saturation/Lightness
11. Set Saturation to -78. This is what you should have now: Image hosted by Photobucket.com
12. Right click the image copy it and paste it back on your original icon as a new layer. Now you should have this: Image hosted by Photobucket.com
13. Create a new Raster layer. Now pick out a border brush and reduce to size 40 and place around your smaller picture. Then duplicate the brush layer and set it to darken for a stronger effect. Mine came from 100x100_brushes
14. Now go to Layers > Merge > Merge all { flatten }

And ta-da, here’s your finished icon:
