Ok this is my first icon so bare with me if I leave bits out. Also I’m sorry but I don’t remember where I got the two gradients from that I use. If anyone can tell me let me know and I’ll credit.

Icon made in PSP9. But I’m sure you clever people can translate it for other programmes.

1. Crop the base to 100x100

2. ADJUST - BRIGHTNESS/CONTRAST . Change the settings to +10 and +20. Then sharpen your image.

3. Duplicate the layer twice and SCREEN both of them. Change the opacity on the top layer to 70%

4. Duplicate the base layer and bring it to the top. Desaturate the layer and then set it to SOFT LIGHT.

7. Open a blank 100x100 canvas and create a new raster layer in it. Flood fill the layer with #000040 (dark blue) and set to EXCLUSION.

8. Go back to your original icon and take the square marquee tool and select a long piece of the image, like this : Image hosted by Photobucket.com

9. Copy the selection and open as a new image. Add a 1px border in black around the selection and copy and paste onto the blank canvas. You also need to flip the picture around so click to Mirror button to do so.
