First Tutorial!
I never thought I would do a tutorial. I told myself I never would. But then I accidentally made this icon, and POOF! My mind exploded and I had to do a tutorial.
This was made in PS7, but probably easily transferred. It's really simple, too, but with a couple intricacies.
This post is probably image heavy, for dial-up users. I tend to be an image freak.
Today, we're going to be making this picture:
into this icon:
We start with a simple base.
This is the base cleaned up, which basically involves sharpening it, then duplicating the base and setting it to Screen at %100. Then, be sure to merge those two layers- that'll come in handy later.
Next, add this texture:
I got it from a wonderful resource website called Foley's Resources.
Set the volcano to Multiply at %100, and you'll get something like this:
You may notice that it looks a little too much like a volcano, but we'll fix that in the next step.
Using the Eyedropper tool, select a medium-brightess (wow, that's such technical talk) red color from the icon. Use that color in a very small brush to touch up the brightest yellows in the icons; just mess around until it looks less like a volcano and more like plain fire. It doesn't take much, so don't go overboard.
Now, you should have something that looks like this:

It's a little dark, so go back to the base and duplicate it. Drag that copy to the top, and set it to Soft Light at %100. It's a small but noticeable difference:

It's beautiful the way it is (mostly because Shia LaBeouf is simply a gorgeous guy already), but I thought the icon could use some text. This gets a little complicated, so work with me here.
I used a font called 'Intimacy', which can be downloaded for free at FontFace.com. I set it at size 10. I chose the words "World on Fire", set on just a plain white, but then put on Color Dodge at %100.

The text simply doesn't show up very well, so all you need to do from here is duplicate the text layer, still on Color Dodge at %100. It looks much better with the extra 'oomph'.
The finished icon:

Don't copy step by step, please. Feel free to take this icon as well, but please credit back to me.
Comments are appreciated, especially since this is my first try at a tutorial. ^_^ And feel free to show me how the technique went with your icon!
