Listens: All I Ask of You - PotO

Second ever tutorial

Hello folks! Today we'll be making the icon I'm posting with in PSP8, starting from this base:

Basic knowledge of layers is required.

We start off with this (base credit to oursadhearts at hp_bases:

And end up with this:

First of all, I duplicate my layer and set it to Soft Light at 100%. Duplicating bright bases at Soft Light is one of the best preparations in my opinion, it sort of adds to the contrast. Flatten the layers. Sharpen once. Now Ctrl-copy and Ctrl + V. You're going to need that copy later.

Now take this texture

by colorfilter, Ctrl + C and then paste as a new layer at Multiply 100%. You should now have this:

Choose the background eraser tool at the following settings. Round, Size 5, Hardness 17, Step 5, Density 100, Thickness 100, Rotation 0, AutoTolerance checked. Now make sure that the texture layer is selected, then start erasing on Emma's face and her shirt. But not anything else!. Flatten.

Use this gradient (by someone whose name I have forgotten, I'm such a klutz. If you recognise this gradient as yours (named g5), do tell me).

Set it to Darken at 100%. Yeah, it looks butt-ugly now, I know. But to make it look good, duplicate the Background Layer and drag it on top of it all and set it to Soft Light at 100%. Flatten the layers now. Now things are looking better, huh? So.

Select the copy of the base and crop one 18x18 section of her left eye. Add a 1px border with #EECBB8 which should be a bright shade of pink. Now resize the selection to 10x10. Copy and paste as new layer on the soon-to-be-finished picture. Now repeat this step, but use different areas such as her lips, her other eye.

Now there should be some sort of faint, thick line going through her shoulder. Can you see it? Good. Now place one of the croppings a bit below the top of the icon. Place the other two on the same line, neatly spaced from each other.

If you have followed my instructions correctly, you should have one background layer at the bottom and then three layers with the tiny croppings from. Now the layer with the cropping you have at the top, make it the least visible one. Set it at about, I dunno, 48%? You do how you wish but the top cropping is the least visible, the middle one next to most visible and the bottom one entirely visible. Play with opacities.

Now for the text. Times New Roman, Centered, size 1.

fill my head with talk of summertime

Don't de-select it yet, go to the deform tool and see if you can find a bar called 'Angle'. Set it to 90,000. Place it next to the croppings, sharpen again and voilà! You're done! If you want to, you can place a 1px border (as a new layer) around the icon with the same colour as before, #EECBB8. I recommend you set it to Overlay, but experiment! I encourage you to!

That's all I had for today and remember, don't copy this tutorial exactly. Use different bases, textures etc. Icon is not free for taking. Comment and please tell me if there's something I can improve about this. I'd love to see what you made inspired by this. ^_^
