Windy Text Effect Tutorial
This is a tutorial for getting the “Windy” Text Effect in PSP 8. It is pretty image heavy so if you have dial up be forewarned. I tried to show step by step as well as describe each step so that new users and visual learners could follow along pretty easily. If you have questions feel free to contact me either by posting a comment or by using my contact info on my user info page and I will try to help. Here is the final product of the tutorial and a simple example of the effect:

The first step is to choose your graphic and crop it how you want it. After you have cropped it, you need to resize down to 100X100 and add any textures, brushes, borders, etc. to it. Once you have the look of your icon complete, you need to Merge/Flatten all your layers so that you have a Background Image to add your text to. I always add my text on its own layer so I can play with different blend modes.
Step 1.) Create a new Raster Layer on your Background/Base.

Step 2.) Now you want to add text on your new layer. Click on your TEXT tool and type your text. Play with different colors and fonts to find the ones that work for you. For the purpose of the tutorial, I am keeping my text and font fairly simple, but you can use just about any font you like, its all a matter of personal preference. I put “you can” in Gentium 7 pt WITHOUT the wind effect and set my layer’s blend mode to Multiply to darken my text slightly.

Step 3.) Now I created a new Raster Layer to add the text that I want the windy effect on. I used Verdana 10pt set on Bold for “Fly”. I dragged it around a bit to place it just right.

Step 4.) Next, I duplicated my “Fly” layer. There are 2 ways to duplicate your layer. You can either go to Layers on your tool bar and Duplicate OR you can simply click on the Duplicate Layer Icon on your Layer Palette.

Step 5.) To get the “Windy” effect, simply go to your tool bar and click on Effects/Distortion Effects/Wind. I chose to have my wind settings at Wind Strength 60 from the Right. (Play with your settings and use your own judgment with what looks good.) I then set my layer properties to Multiply at 75% Opacity then duplicated my layer and set those properties to Dodge 65% Opacity. Again, all this is a matter of personal taste. You don’t HAVE to change blend modes or duplicate your windy layer.

(For the simple example the wind settings were 1 From Right and the Layer Opacity was 45%. I didn't change any blend modes on it.)
That is pretty much all there is to it, merge your layers and enjoy your Windy Text Icon. :)
