Tutorial for PS 7

My very first tutorial! Please bear with me...

From Base to Icon

1. Ok. Let's first start with a base picture. I'm going to use the following picture of American Idol spunk Constantine Maroulis.

Constantine

2. Crop the picture to 90x90, so we have this:

Base

3. Now, I like to tinker with my base, so I'm gonna Sharpen (Filter >> Sharpen >> Sharpen), and lighten it a bit. First, I'm going to duplicate my sharpened base, and set the blending mode to Soft Light. Then, I'll duplicate the soft light base, and set that one to Screen. See how pretty and light it is now?

Now we wanna merge the layers (Layer >> Merge Visible).

4. Create a new 100x100 document

5. Add a gradient to your new blank layer. I'm using the following by crumblingwalls

Gradient1

6. Paste your cropped base onto the new document with the gradient. Position your picture in the left-hand corner (or wherever you want. In this case, I'm going for the left hand corner.)

7. Create a new layer, and add your second gradient. Again by crumblingwalls.

Gradient2

Now set the blending mode to Screen.

8. It's a little washed out, so duplicate Layer 2 (the one between the gradients, and paste it on top of all your layers. Set the blending mode to Soft Light.

See how pretty it is now?

9. Add a new layer on the top of everything. This is the text layer. So whack it in where you want it, I'm going for the right-hand corner of the picture. I simply wrote "Constantine" in lower case letters, with the following settings:
+ Font: Georgia, Regular
+ Size: 10pt
+ Anti-Alias: Sharp
+ Colour: #F1509D

Text

10. Create a new layer and drag it beneath your text layer. Select a brush (I used a burst-y looking one, under "Assorted Brushes" in default photoshop).

Brush

Click it just once somewhere beneath your text. I positioned mine mid-way through his name. I used the same colour as the text.

11. New layer. Using the same brush, but in a white colour, go up the side of the picture.
