Photoshop CS Text Problem

Well, I just went to the memories and didn't really find anything pertaining to my problem (though I could have missed it by accident and if so please forgive me). I have Photoshop CS and I'm kind of a newb. Anyways, I was working on icons and the text tool was working fine. However, I opened a new document and wanted to add text. When I used the text tool, the whole image turned orange-ish, red-ish and when I typed the text, it didn't show up. When I clicked the image afterwards, the text showed up but it looked like it was outlined by the magic wand tool. I had no idea what was going on but I went on to open a new file. I tried to put text on it but none of it showed up. That time, the image didn't turn orange-ish, red-ish but the text still wasn't showing up. I have no idea what's going on. Some help, please?
