Full Icon Tutorial--Photoshop CS
Naomi Watts Icon Tutorial by
quistrepe for Photoshop CS
We shall be going from this
to
this.
This tutorial assumes you have at least a basic working knowledge of Photoshop CS 1 and an understanding of blend modes.
First we open and select the part of the image we want to use for this icon. I've chosen the face and the area that surrounds it--you can choose otherwise.

Credit for image to http://fan-sites.org/naomi-watts/ for the base image.
Then, when you've got the image positioned how you want it on the 100x100 pixel canvass, make a new layer then apply this gradient (made by me)
and set it to exclusion with the fill at 40%. You should have something that looks like this
Ideally, you could leave it at that. But I think it looks a little bit plain. So, I duplicate the first layer we have of Naomi's face, and I set it over the top of the exclusion layer, and adjust the blend setting to Luminance.
We should now have something that looks similar to this:

On a new layer, flood fill with
#F4F0D6, and set it to Soft Light.
Again, you could stop there if you wanted to. It'd still be a pretty icon. But I'm taking it a few steps further. Make another duplicate of your base image. Drag it to the top, and set it to saturation in the blend options at 40% fill. You should have something that looks vaguely like this:

With a square brush at 11 px and with the colour white on a new layer, I then used the grid (shortcut key: control+') feature to draw two square lines that run alongside and intersect at one point. I've done it like this:
.
We don't need to fiddle with any of the settings on this layer. Again, you're quite welcome to stop at this step. I'm going to put a 2px border (in black) around the icon. New layer, select all> marquee tool. Right click, go down to 'stroke', and then set it at 2px black.
You could stop there. I decided I wanted text. With the font called advocut, size 9 and anti-aliasing off, I wrote "beautiful dreamer" along the white horizontal line.
You should now have something that looks like this:
Feedback would be nice, but not required. You may take the icon, or you can show me what you've done with the same steps!
