Using icon bases in PSP7

Okay, so I've recently downloaded some icon bases/base textures to use in icons, only I'm not 100% on the best ways to use them. I was just wondering if anyone had any hints/tutorials that I could follow just to get a feel for bases and the best ways to use them. Any help would be very much appreciated.
