Template tutorial for Photoshop

Trying again: with images. I hope this is helpful for Photoshop users :)

1) Open the image you want to use for the icon.

2) Copy and paste it into a fresh transparent layer.

3) On the layer pallet, choose create new layer

Once you've done that everything should look like this:

4) Open the template you want to use.

5) Use the marquee selection tool and select the entire area.

If you've done that it should look like this:

6) Go to edit>copy

7) Now, to eliminate confusion, go ahead and close the template.

8) back to your image, make sure the new layer is highlighted

9) Go to edit>paste. This will paste the template into the new layer.

If you've done it correctly it will look like this:

10) Note that the magic wand tool is highlighted (I've circled it in green)

11) Making sure that the template layer is highlighted (also circled in green) begin using the magic wand to click in the white areas and select them. If you hold down the shift key while doing this you can get them all at the same time.

12) After you have them all selected (it should look like this) ...

... go to edit>clear

Once you've cleared the white areas, your work space should look like this:

13) Make sure your image layer is highlighted (circled in green), then zoom in on your image so you can see the pixels.

14) Select the eraser tool

and make sure it's set like this:

Begin erasing the areas you want transparent. I'm choosing to erase the outside boxes. It should look like this:

If some of your template fades as you're erasing, don't worry about it. When you're finished erasing just highlight your template layer, then in the top menu go to Layer>Duplicate Layer and it will darken up the faded areas.

When you've finished all of your erasing your icon should look similar to this:

Remember to save it as a gif (to preserve transparency) and you're done.
