Make these icons: 
1) Find a plain 100X100 image, or make your own. This is one by Kireirei.
2) Open up your basepacks/textures and pick one as your Icon background. This is one of my own.
3) chop up your 100x100 image into small boxes that are only a part of whatever the original icon was, and layer it over your base image on 100% opacity.
4) find another base or gradient or light textures, whatever tickles your toes. Layer it on. The trick to making a good icon or a complete shit icon is finding the right blend mode, so try them all! This is one of my own, on layer mode overlay.

5) Change the opacity so it doesn't ruin the icon, and the image is still visible. Mine is on 46%
6) Merge your layers and voolah! you may choose to sharpen it, most people do.
