texture help!

Ok, I looked in the memories and I couldn't find anything to help me with this. I am making an icon, and I put a texture by dearest over it, and it really washed out my original picture. I set it to screen, and the bottom of it looks good, but the top of it is washing out the picture I have under it. I tried using different settings, like overlay, soft light, pin light, etc. but I can't get it to look the way I want it to. Its set at screen right now. I like how the bottom of it looks, the light part, but i want to turn down the yellow-ness in the top part. But, when I change the opacity, it changes the light part at the bottom too.  I don't usually use textures because I can never get them to look the way I want them too!  Does anyone have any tips for me?? Thanks in advance!
