Non-studio shots as icons

Can anyone recommend some good tutorials in PS7 that use non-posed/non-studio pictures as bases? I've been making a lot of NASCAR/IRL icons lately and I find that most tutorials don't work properly with bases that aren't posed or from screen shots. I'm trying to make an icon with the base below and am having no luck with any of the tutorials I have tried.
