Sharpen vs. Unsharp Mask

Hey everyone,
I don't really remember seeing this particular question asked here, and I hope it'll help some other people too. I use Photoshop 7, and I've always used Filter - Sharpen - Sharpen in order to sharpen my icons. But I see some people using Unsharp Mask and some people also tell me it's better than just Sharpen because it's more controlled.

Anyway, I just wanted to ask what exactly the difference is between the two, and how you use Unsharp Mask? I see it in some tutorials but I haven't really found one yet that goes into much detail about it.

The Unsharp Mask box has Amount (which I guess kind of changes the amount of sharpening), Radius, and Threshold. So, should I be using the Radius or Threshold at all when using Unsharp Mask, or just Amount?

So I guess basically I'd just kind of like to know the difference between Sharpen and Unsharp Mask, and how to use Unsharp Mask in particular. Thanks, guys!
