Using Textures in PSP
Okay, so someone asked for a tutorial on using textures the other day. Fair enough, they were using PS and this is for PSP, but ya gotta get it where ya can, eh? This will be a basic run-down of ways you an incorporate textures into your icons, and when different settings will do. Okay, let's get on with it!
,
icon_textures and so on For the purposes of this tutorial, we'll be using this textures from
katatoniagrafix.
Basic chart of blending modes.
I'll be using this base from Animal House:
And this texture from
katatoniagrafix:
Step 1) Paste the texture AS A NEW RASTER LAYER on top of your base.
Step 2) Go to layer properties and set the blend mode. (I generally lower the opacity of mine to anywhere between 50%-70%, but you just kind of have to fiddle with that.)
Blend mode outcomes with a light/dusky texture(all done at 52%:
+
=
color legacy
color
burn
soft light
screen
saturation
overlay
normal
multiply
luminance legacy
luminance
lighten
hue
hard light
exclusion
dodge
difference
darken
Textures also are great for black and white bases!
Taking this base from
katatoniagrafix:
And by adding this texture:
A few ideas:
saturation @ 100%
Multiply @ 78%
Screen @44%
Overlay @ 68%
Difference @ 56%
[ At this point in the tutorial, Photobucket took a big fat crap on me, so you don't get to see the rest of the pretties... but burn @ 100% looked fantastic]
Other helpful hints:
* Play around with opacity for interesting effects!
* Darker textures with have a drastically different effect than textures that are light (especially pinks, goldens and tans)
* Make sure it's always set as a new layer.
* If a bit of a texture is covering up someone's face or another important detail, you can always erase that bit of it. That's the beauty of layers
* Experiment with different colors and textures. It's all about trial and error!
