Again Frustrated

I have GIMP version 1.2, and I was wondering if anyone else whop has this version has any problems saving files and images in .gif format. Do I need to download that capability from some where? I find that when I want to save and animation, I go to save it, and I know that I should save it in .gif form, but that is not listed as one of the formats...../

Please I am about ready to explode! I just need some answers!
