Here's a nifty icon tutorial to make black and white images look beautiful.

I got an image of the wonderful swedish singer Marie Serneholt from here and I resized/cropped/and sharpened my image into 100x100 size like this:

Now I desaturate >> Image >> Grey Scale and then go back to >> Image >> Increase Color Depth >> 16 Million Colors

Now duplicate the layer >> Layers >> Duplicate >> and set the blend mode to screen.

Mere the layers and then duplicate the image again and then go to >> Adjust >> Hue and Saturation >> Hue/Saturation/
Lightess >> and change your settings like this: Hue: - 180 ; Saturation: 0 ; Lightness: 0. Set your blend mode
to softlight. Merge your layers.

Make a selection like this using your point-to-point selection tool.

Fill it in with a grey and white gradient

Now I use one of lvlwing's BEAUTIFUL light textures from here and set the blend mode to screen. Just search through the memories and you'll find them
:). I used the one named lvlwinglights3.jpg.

Now I duplicate the icon and set the blend mode to burn at a 42% opacity and I merge the layers.

Now I use some icon brushes from Hybrid-Genesis.net for
my final touch.
