Full icon tutorial for adobe cs (using texture, brushes, type tool and blending modes :)
here's a tutorial which goes from this 
and leads you to this 
ok first i take this pic of the geekiest guy in the world Justin Bartha (National Treasure)
and make my base out of it.....
i get this
then i add an exclusion layer using color #003562
then i add a soft light layer and fill it with this gradient
(i was just playing with it i don't think it makes any difference)
now comes a texture.....i add this texture by forbidden storm
(sorry i don't have a link to her lj) BUT i desaturate it and then go to hue/saturation and check colorize and selected a color that suited my needs 
...
i set the layer to multiply and don't touch the opacity
then i add another gradient
(i think this one is from crumbling_walls)
layer mode is soft light
now, don't get me wrong, i ADORE muted colors but it just didn't work for this one so i duplicated the base and set it on top of everything, and set layer mode to soft light again
after that i thought the coloring part was done so i started adding STUFF
i added thsi brush

set layer mode to soft light, pulled the opacity down to 70
added text "major GEEK" in white color, and then i went to layer blending - outer glow, set to color burn in color #F0AC76
NOW, i knwo thsi looks just fiiiiine as it is, but i had to, I HAD TO add a border, cause i'm a border addict....i did this one by dorky_duck
and voila!!!!
