Cannot open file in PSP8.

Anyway:
I need help. I saved a file as a .PSP image and now when I try to open it in Paint Shop Pro it tells me that 'an error has occured while opening the file'.
This is the only copy of the graphic I have on my computer and I spent hours on it... is there any way I can open it? Are there any other programs that can open .PSP files if PSP8 won't? (I have tried creating a copy, but that doesn't help.) If not do you know how this might of happened and how to avoid it happening again.
