You don't need text brushes for text in your icons.... didn't you know?

Okay people, I created a short simple tutorial on how to create your own text in your icons. I keep seeing people looking for text brushes of this word or that word, when you know you can type it all on your own and be more creative with them.

The icon is this

Adding creative text in your icons.

1. 2. 3.

  • You're ready to add your text into your icon.

  • Select your TEXT tool

  • Select your font, size and color. Then click on the icon, where ever you want your text to be.

  • Start typing. Change/edit the text how ever you want.

  • Now you want to add some small tiny text into your icon because they look neat. So! Just repeat the previous step. You just need to change the size to a very small size and expand the letters' tracking which is that option that has letter AV and the arrows to the right and left. Change it to anything above 200 points.

  • All done! You can be more creative by putting your tiny text in the middle of your larger text. So you want to do that now. Just go to your larger text layer and add a layer mask to it. Use your rectangular shape tool to erase (with the layer masking) the mid part of it.

  • So you have the layer mask selected, by using the rectangular tool, and make sure your foreground color is BLACK, just create a rectangular shape along the middle part of the large text where you want it to be erased. See picture above. Then just move your tiny text layer to the blank part.. and tada! Then if you want to move them both around together, just link the two layers together by clicking the box next to the 'eye' on the layer pallete of the two text layers. And drag the texts around your icons.

  • On my second & third icons up there, I actually added shadow underneath the text. I 'merged' the two text layers together so they're no longer 'text' layers. They were automatically 'rasterized' by doing so. It is now just a layer. So I added a layer filter which is that symbol with an 'F' on the bottom of the layer pallete. And just pick Drop Shadow from there and edit the settings as how you like them.

All done. You don't need text brushes to be able to do neat text in your icons. Be creative on your own. Don't be lazy, really. If you want to learn, then learn it right. Do it the hard way! And this isn't hard at all! ;)
