I made this icon a few days ago, and I liked the way it turned out. Hopefully, someone will want to try this. [g]
Go from this:
To this:
I'm starting with the following cap, made by peacefully, cropped and resized.
Then I use auto contrast (under image>adjustments), but I wasn't satisfied with the color on that, so I went to brightness/contrast (also under image>adjustments) and changed the settings to something I liked (in this case, 15 for brightness and 30 for contrast):
Next, I sharpened the image, duplicated the layer, and set it to screen. After that, I went back to image>adjustments, and clicked on desaturate. I changed the layer's opacity to 50%, and sharpened it once more, for good measure.

Once that was done, I added another layer, filled it with a dark blue color (in this case, 1F1696), and changed the blending options to exclusion, then changed the opacity to 35%.

After this, I went back to the original image, duplicated it, and dragged it on top of everything else I'd done.I set the blending options to screen. Once that was done, I went back to image>adjustments>brightness/contrast and changed the brightness to -10 and contrast to 35.

Then I created another layer, and used a gradient from noctuidae's set of cream-colored gradients:
And then, I set the blending options to soft light.
